The Location


The beautiful Waternish peninsula is situated in the North West corner of the Isle of Skye. Eilean Isay is in the village of Lusta. The famous 'Three Chimneys' restaurant is approximately 20 minutes drive away and 'The Old School House' restaurant in Dunvegan a 15 minute drive is highly recommended. In Dunvegan you will find the historic Dunvegan Castle, the stronghold of the MacLeod clan with its beautiful gardens and historic fairy flag. There are also small seal boat trips that can be taken from here as well as fishing boat trips. Dunvegan village has a mini market, two bakers, garage selling newspapers, post office, several tearooms, fruit & veg store. From Dunvegan it is a short drive and walk to the lovely Coral Beach sands.

The capital town of Portree is approximately 20 miles from the cottage (a 25 minute drive) and here you will find the largest supermarket on the island – the Co-op which sells just about everything, there is also a butchers, fish shop, newsagent, gift shop, Boots chemist etc as well as many eateries and hotels. There is a swimming pool open to the public in Portree High School along with a library and wi-fi access. During the summer months boat trips around the island are available. The Cuillin Hills hotel in Portree has stunning views and Sunday lunch is highly recommended. Just outside the town The Aros Centre has a small cinema, exhibition room, gift shop and tearoom. Bike hire is also available.

The picturesque village of Stein (on the lochside) is just a short 10 minute walk from the cottage and here you will find the local Diving School offering boat trips during the summer months. The Stein Inn (oldest pub on the island) serve excellent bar food in their cosy lounge area as well as the dining room. They also have a delightful pub garden on the banks of the loch where you can enjoy a drink whilst watching the renowned Waternish sunsets over the bay. The award winning Loch Bay seafood restaurant serving locally caught seafood is also based in Stein and is certainly worth at least one visit – it is advisable to pre-book. Within walking distance of the cottage you will find 'Skyeskyns' which is a sheepskin workshop & showroom, where hand combed fleeces are produced using traditional methods. The area is rich in local history, beautiful scenery and seascapes; many local sights and activities are close by. Among these are horse-riding, walking, cycling, climbing, boat trips and many, many more.
